This summer, that belief came to life on Cape Cod through a simple, joyful act: refilling a water bottle.
A Conversation with ReThink Disposable: Reuse in Action
We recently caught up with Amber Schmidt, New England Zero Waste Organizer for ReThink Disposable at Clean Water Fund, to talk about a small but powerful experiment in low-waste travel—and how it brought locals and visitors together, one refill at a time. “Even as someone who runs zero-waste programs, I struggle to keep my reuse habits going while traveling,” Amber admits. “Post-COVID, refill stations feel harder to find. Public fountains are disappearing, and single-use plastic is back in full force.”
That gap sparked a local innovation—one that turned a basic need into a meaningful experience rooted in sustainability, community, and care.
Refill and Reconnect: A Portable Water Station with Purpose
Through a collaboration with CARE for the Cape and Islands, Amber helped pilot a portable hydration station designed for community events. The goal? Make low-waste living easier and more visible—and make water more than just a utility.
The setup was simple but impactful:
- A foldable table
- A food-grade hose
- A compact filter system
- Eight water nozzles
It’s inexpensive, scalable, and hooks up to any potable water source. But what makes it special isn’t the hardware—it’s the intention behind it.
The Orleans 4th of July Parade: A Case Study in Connection
The water station debuted at the Orleans 4th of July Parade, quietly transforming the sidewalk outside the community center into something more than a hydration stop.
“It became the heart of the event,” Amber says. “People lingered, talked, rested. Children played. Families connected. Locals and visitors met as equals.”
One resident summed it up best:
“This feels like someone thought about us.”
That simple comment captured everything the project was meant to do—create an inclusive, sustainable space where everyone felt welcome and cared for.
Responsible Travel, Redefined
When we talk about responsible travel, we often think of offsets, certifications, or eco-lodging. But it can start with something as universal and humble as a refill of water.
“Small shifts—like adding a water refill station at a community event—can have a big impact,” says Adam Gracia, Executive Director of CARE for the Cape & Islands. “It’s not just about reducing waste; it’s about creating moments of connection between locals and visitors. When we design with intention, even something as simple as a sip of water becomes an invitation to slow down, engage, and be part of something bigger”.
At its best, a water station becomes more than infrastructure—it becomes a thoughtfully designed touchpoint where:
- Visitors and residents meet on equal footing
- Community and sustainability go hand in hand
- A simple act of care opens the door to meaningful connection
Responsible travel doesn’t always require a grand gesture. Sometimes, it looks like:
- Asking where to fill your bottle—and starting a conversation in the process
- Choosing events that ditch single-use plastic in favor of reuse
- Supporting destinations that prioritize visibility, access, and joy in sustainable practices
A Scalable Model for Responsible Tourism
This is more than a Cape Cod story. For just a few hundred dollars and minimal setup, refill stations like this can be placed at:
- Farmers markets
- Concerts
- Parades
- Sports events
- Community gatherings
The result? Fewer plastic bottles, more hydrated (and happy) guests, and stronger relationships between travelers and local communities.
It’s an easy, high-impact tool for destinations, towns, tourism boards, and nonprofits looking to create more thoughtful visitor experiences.

This summer proved something powerful: responsible travel doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be thoughtful.
