Few embody this more than Gene Arnould, who for 47 years has helped visitors see Marblehead through the eyes of its artists. At Arnould Gallery & Framery, Gene’s mission has always been simple: support local art, build community, and celebrate a true sense of place.
His gallery isn’t just a shop but it’s a place where memories are framed, stories are shared, and the heart of Marblehead is felt in every piece.
A Passion Rooted in Art and Place
Gene never planned to become a gallery owner. After moving from Illinois to Cambridge in 1969, attending divinity school at Harvard University, he eventually found his way to Marblehead, where he worked as a minister at the historic Old North Church. He loved the town’s deep sense of history and community. But when he left in 1975 to pursue graduate studies in theatre history at Indiana University, something didn’t sit right.
“I was miserable there,” Gene admits. “I decided to return to Marblehead.”
What followed was a period of reflection and uncertainty. He had always loved art, had a hand for framing, and had begun to truly appreciate the quieter power of place.
