Tourism works best when it works for everyone: visitors, locals, and the place they both care about.
You don’t need to build something new.
Shape what’s already there into something people can feel.

Today’s travelers are looking for more than just sights. They want to get involved, support local communities, and hear real stories. This means it’s time to uncover and elevate experiences that reflect local identity, welcome participation, and support both locals and guests.
Start shaping your experience with these steps:
- Clarify Your Purpose: What do you want this experience to offer — and why does it matter?
- Take Inventory: What people, stories, places, and traditions already exist that you can build from?
- Spot the Gaps: Where do you need ideas, support, or collaboration to bring it all together?
- Write Your Why: Jot down what inspired your idea and what you want others to feel, learn, or take away from the experience.
- Create a story map: List 3–5 local people, places, or stories that could become part of your experience.
- Mood board for feeling: Gather what captures the spirit eg photos of local people, places; words that reflect your values; stories, cultural references of what you want to create.
Start here to create experiences that matter- culturally, socially, and economically.
What Matters to Your Community:
-Have we talked with locals about what they care about — not just what visitors expect?
-Does this experience protect what’ s special here (culturally, environmentally)?
-Are we showing the real heart of the place — or just the postcard version?
Invite Participation, Not Just Observation
-Can guests take part in something hands-on? (Think: harvesting, crafting, cooking,
storytelling)
-Are there meaningful ways for visitors to connect with locals?
-Is the experience welcoming for all ages and abilities?
Make Sure Locals Benefit
-Are we sourcing goods, food, or talent locally?
-Do locals earn fair pay or gain skills through this?
-Are we making space for everyone, is it all inclusive?
Share Real Stories
-Are stories being told by the people who lived them?
-Are we being honest about the place — the beauty and the challenges?
-Are we using language that feels human, not like an ad?
Use What You Already Have
-Are we celebrating everyday places — trails, kitchens, markets, traditions?
-Can we repurpose or reimagine what’s already here?
-Are we avoiding overdevelopment?
Keep Listening
-Do we ask for feedback from both visitors and locals?
-Are we ready to pause or pivot if something is not working?
-Are we in this for the long-term — not just the tourist season?
